In the first terror attack targeting police personnel in the Kashmir Valley this year, a lone terrorist, believed to be a Pakistani, shot dead a policeman on Amarnath Yatra security duty in South Kashmir's Anantnag town on Wednesday.
The attack on Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi occurred around 12:30 pm at Lal Chowk in Anantnag.
The Resistance Front (TRF), a shadow group of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), claimed responsibility for the targeted attack in a social media post shortly after the incident, officials said.
Qureshi, a resident of Beerwah in central Kashmir, was posted in the Jammu and Kashmir Police's IRP 3rd Battalion. He was critically injured and rushed to the Government Medical College Hospital in Anantnag, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The Calcutta High Court on Monday refused the Mamata Banerjee faction of the Trinamool Congress interim permission to operate three of the party's bank accounts frozen by the Enforcement Directorate.
The ED froze the three bank accounts of the Trinamool Congress with balances amounting to Rs 440.42 crore in connection with its probe based on an FIR lodged by the state police in alleged dishonest financial dealings, unlawful collection of money, and routing of suspected funds through certain bank accounts of the party.
Justice Krishna Rao had on July 13 reserved the interim order on the prayer after arguments by the parties in the matter were concluded.
According to officials, the Enforcement Directorate's preliminary investigation found that about Rs 160 crore was transferred from the TMC's bank accounts to Carewell Aviation India Pvt. Ltd. and its related entity between April 2023 and June 2026.

The government has not yet decided to raise ethanol blending in petrol beyond the current 20 per cent level, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi told the Rajya Sabha on Monday, adding that any future increase would follow further scientific study and consultation with industry.
"So far, no decision has been taken by the government for increasing ethanol blending with petrol beyond 20 per cent," Gopi said in a written reply to a question. Any move higher would come "only after detailed scientific and technical studies and consultations with all relevant stakeholders, including automobile manufacturers, Oil Marketing Companies and research institutions," he said.
Gopi said India reached the 20 per cent blending target five years ahead of schedule, with average blending rising from about 1.53 per cent in 2013-14 to 20 per cent in the 2025-26 supply year, after more than two decades of phased rollout.

Thousands of young and angry people converged on  central Delhi on Monday, only to be met by police teargas and lathi-charges in a spiralling protest that started with exam paper leaks and gained traction with activist Sonam Wangchuk's hunger strike.

Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned till 12 noon on Thursday as Opposition parties continued to insist on Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation before starting a discussion on the NEET paper leak issue.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the government was ready for a discussion on NEET on Thursday itself and the Opposition should not put any condition for holding the debate.
However, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said Pradhan has to resign first before any discussion on the issue can take place.
